Conflict - Colombian conflict

Colombian Conflict

In the world, there are a lot of different conflicts. These conflicts are usually caused from different attitudes, beliefs, values or needs, etc. The Colombian conflict is also one of these conflicts which take place in South America.

This conflict all started  40 years ago in Colombia because like so much of Latin America, there were  huge gaps between a very small amount of rich people who led government and the rest of the people being very poor people. These poor people were desperate for change in the system. Some people thought if they over through the government, may be they wouldn't be so poor anymore.

Because of the influence of communism which took place in Latin America. Colombia's poor or the campesinos started rebel groups trying to put in a communist one, one that they believed would help the campesinos. The two strongest groups of rebels that formed were the revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and the National Liberation Army (ELN).

Because of the cause there was a great need for money to finance the war. They started to kidnap, and extort money from the wealthy Colombians. The wealthy Colombians formed paramilitarie groups to fight with FARC and ELN because they were sick and tired of the problems.

Colombia has good environment to grow the coca plant. As you can see in the map Colombia has coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It is also has the Andes Mountains running through this country which is a great place to grow the coca plant. The tropical climate has allowed Colombia to produces 80 % of the world's cocaine. The Campesinos can make more in one day working on a coca farm than they would if they worked on a coffee or fruit farm in an entire month. Because there is so much money to be made form the drug trade the FARC and ELN are strongly involved in this.

This has caused many people to die because the FARC and ELN are fighting against the paramilitaries and the government. The camopesinos are caught in the middle. For example, if the FARC and ELN discover that the cmpesinos have been helping the Paramilitaries by giving them food or information, they are often killed and vise versa.

Now the America government has stepped in this conflict because they don't want to allow this drug trade plus they don't want Colombia to become a communist country. So they are giving tied aid to the Colombian government and most of this aid is used to buy weapons for the wars and only one percent of this US money goes toward Colombia's social programs. Also the European Union wants to solve this conflict having peace talks, but have had very little success.

At the moment the wealthy Colombian say they feel safer but it has come at a huge price because so many lives have been taken.  Still now fifty percent of the world kidnappings take place in Colombia, making it the kidnapping capital of the world with over three thousand a year.

I think this conflict all stared from the gap between the wealthy and the poor. The poor being in great need to change and the wealthy trying to keep their wealth. In my opinion, even if the fighting stops and a communist government is formed, there still will be the rich and the poor because I think it is very hard to divide the nations' wealth. So will this problem ever be solved??

Act 1, Scene 2; Frailty, thy name is woman!

In my speech, My character is Hamlet, in Hamlet at Act 1 Scene 2. This scene is about Claudius sends Laertes to France and declares that hamlet is next in line to be King. Also in this scene, Hamlet's Friend horatio and soldiers saw his father's ghost so Hamlet agrees to watch with them at night.

My speech is comes out when Hamlet saw his mother, the queen, Certrude and the uncle Claudius fall in love within  2 month from his father's death. Hamlet really angry about her mother who merried with uncle how fast speed. Hamlet compare with his father and Claudius for how they love the queen, and their character. In speech, Hamlet called that his father is Hyperion which means good, and the best, and Claudius is Satyr which means bad, and the lowest.

He also talk about how much his father love the queen. He shows his father's love which compare to protection about wind of heaven. However, the queen married with king's brother Claudius really fast speed that less than 2 month after king die. Therefore, Hamlet feels anger and abhor to his mother and Cladius. Hamlet though the reason that weakeness of his mother is about woman. The woman which in the quote 'Frailty, thy name is woman' is shows every woman but in the sort range, this woman designate the queen.

He also feels anger with Ophelia for lie to him about her father looks out Hamlet. When Hamlet ask to Ophelia where is her fater, Polonious, the Ophelia answered 'He is stay at home'. However, Hamlet knew everythings going on, so he felt sad and anger to her. In those scenes I can see Hamlet was truble with most of women who come out this act. Therefore, he can't believe any woman, ever that is his mother and girl who he love.

In this speech, most of feeling of Hamlet is anger hatred from his mother, Ophelia, and Claudius so I sould act or say very sorrowful

Hamlet quote - Frailty, thy name is woman

"Frailty, thy name is woman" is the speech from Shakespear's Hamlet, 1603, act 1 scene 2 which describe weakness of character of women. when Hamlet say this speech, he is angry that his mother, Queen Gertrude, hs married his uncle Claudius within a month of his fater's death. To Hamlet, his mother is the true type of woman. "Frailty, thy name is woman" is also shows the other woman who called Ophelia. Ophelia is the girl who love Hamlet. However, she betray Hamlet when he ask to her, where is her father. In that time, she said "at Home" even though his father was hide behinde the curtain with Hamlet's uncle Claudius.

This quote also means woman is weeker than man. However, right now those thinks were becoming to change. A lot of woman get on to the society, people can see the woman's power. For the small range, it is also called mother's power. Lot of woman fought for this rights and finally, not we are looking different of woman movements compare whith past at the Shakespear's period.

<Quote from  internet>

Claudius, who, Hamlet claims, is "no more like my father/ Than I to Hercules" (lines 152-153) and compares to his father as "Hyperion to a satyr" (line 140)-as the sun-god to a deformed goat-man.

Similar but Different: apples & oranges

Apples and oranges are really ordinary fruits which can find easy around of our life but have you ever think about which one is better? Apples and Oranges are looks similar but have many different factors. They are different of nutrition, superstitions, and mythologies but they are they same fruit which everyone likes it.

Apples and oranges have lot of nutrition as so as other fruits but those fruits obtain amount of nutrition is different each other. When we compare both fruit of nutrition, the amount of each fruit will be same. Therefore I use value per 100g edible portion. The most part of apples contains of water as so as other fruits and oranges which fills 83.93. The most nutriment of apples without water is carbohydrate which has 15.25g and can make 59kcalories of energy. However, oranges contain bit more water than apples which is 86.75 and it also the most contain carbohydrate in the other nutriment which have 11.75g. Strange thing is even though apples contain more carbohydrate than oranges but have fewer calories. The reason is might be oranges have little bit more of protein so it has more calories. The biggest different between nutrition of oranges and apples is vitamin C. Oranges contain 53.2 mg of vitamin C but apples only have 5.7mg which shows quiet lot of difference in nutrition facts. This is the reason if we eat oranges it helps maintain a healthy immune system. According to the nutrition facts, oranges is superior to apple because of contain quiet a lot of vitamin C which means have more nutrition. Therefore In this fact, like oranges better.

Apples and oranges is the fruit which most of people know about and as much people know about, there are a lot of mythologies or stories. I guess the oldest mythologies about apples are the apple tree in the Garden of Eden which mention in the bible. In the bible Eve and Adam get out of the Garden of Eden because of eat these apples. Actually, in the bible, nowhere mentioned it is the apple tree but somehow, a lot of people believe this mythology. Also apple is also comes out of the myth of Greece which is symbol of beauty and love. Even we can find apple in the famous story which called William Tell. In this story, he shot an apple of f his son's head use the arrow. On the other hand, oranges don't have any mythology of story. Therefore I can guess orange was less popular and has shorter history than apples.

Apples and Oranges have lot of superstitions as much as their history with people. These superstitions are different with mythologies or stories. These superstitions are people believe behavior when they eat and have, etc. those fruits. During long time, people think of five of six names of boys or girls might marry, as one person twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. That person will marry the person whose name that person was saying when the stem fell off. Also there is another superstition about apple which if cut an apple in half and counts how many seeds are inside, people will also know how many children people will have. Also there have some superstition about oranges. In china, orange peels are used to aid in digestion. They believe that citrus fruits are warming, thus very stimulating on the digestive tract and in medieval time, oranges and orange blossoms were used on a couple's wedding day. It was believed that the scent of oranges was calming to the couple on their wedding night. They were also thought to be a symbol of fertility.

Apples and oranges have a lot of difference each other. Those two fruit have different nutrition, different mythologies and different superstitions but some parts are quiet similar. Valuable of those three facts of apples and oranges are almost equal but I take nutrition fact more valuable than other facts of apples and oranges. There fore, in my opinion, oranges are higher and have more advantage than apples but this mean is not apples are rubbish. Apples have other merit like oranges but in my research, oranges have more advantage for me. How ever, which one is better are not important. You guys are just enjoying the fruits which you like and try to know knowledge about those fruits.

Edgar Allen Poe - note1

The Collected Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe - http://books.eserver.org/poetry/poe/

The works of Edagar Allen Poe - http://www.pambytes.com/poe/poe.html#prose

Poe's Life - Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston. Elizabeth Arnold Poe died in Richmond on December 8, 1811, and Edgar was taken into the family of John Allan, a member of the firm of Ellis and Allan, tobacco-merchants.

After attending schools in England and Richmond, young Poe registered at the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826, the second session of the University. He became an active member of the Jefferson Literary Society, and passed his courses with good grades at the end of the session in December. Mr. Allan failed to give him enough money for necessary expenses, and Poe made debts of which his so-called father did not approve. Mr. Allan probably sent him a little money later, and Poe went to Boston. There he published a little volume of poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems. It is such a rare book now that a single copy has sold for $200,000.00.

Poe published a second book of poetry in 1829: Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. After another quarrel with Allan (who had married a second wife in 1830), Poe no longer received aid from his foster father. Poe then took the only method of release from the Academy, and got himself dismissed on March 6, 1831.

Soon after Poe left West Point, a third volume appeared: Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, Second Edition. While living in Baltimore with his aunt, Mrs. Clemm, young Poe began writing prose tales. Five of these appeared in the Philadelphia Saturday Courier in 1832.

Poe married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm in Richmond on May 16, 1836.

in 1838 he went to Philadelphia where he lived for six years. He was an editor of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine from July, 1839 to June, 1840, and of Graham's Magazine from April, 1841 to May, 1842. In April, 1844, with barely car fare for his family of three, [including his aunt, Virginia's mother, who lived with them], Poe went to New York where he found work on the New York Evening Mirror.

In 1840, Poe's Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was published in two volumes in Philadelphia. In 1845, Poe became famous with the spectacular success of his poem "The Raven," and in March of that year, he joined C. F. Briggs in an effort to publish The Broadway Journal. Also in 1845,Wiley and Putnam issued Tales by Edgar A. Poe and The Raven and Other Poems.

The year 1846 was a tragic one. Poe rented the little cottage at Fordham, where he lived the last three years of his life. The Broadway Journal failed, and Virginia became very ill and died on January 30, 1847. After his wife's death, Poe perhaps yielded more often to a weakness for drink, which had beset him at intervals since early manhood. He was unable to take even a little alcohol without a change of personality, and any excess was accompanied by physical prostration.

The circumstances of Poe's death remain a mystery. After a visit to Norfolk and Richmond for lectures, he was found in Baltimore in a pitiable condition and taken unconscious to a hospital where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849. He was buried in the yard of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

cnflict note

http://www.ctic.purdue.edu/KYW/Brochures/ManageConflict.html

 Understanding conflict.

What is conflict?
Conflict is a natural disagreement resulting from individuals or groups that differ in attitudes, beliefs, values or needs. It can also originate from past rivalries and personality differences. Other causes of conflict include trying to negotiate before the timing is right or before needed information is available.

The ingredients of conflict.

Needs - Needs are things that are essential to our well-being. Conflicts arise when we ignore others' needs, our own needs or the group's needs. Be careful not to confuse needs with desires (things we would like, but are not essential).

Perceptions - People interpret reality differently. They perceive differences in the severity, causes and consequences of problems. Misperceptions or differing perceptions may come from: self-perceptions, others' perceptions, differing perceptions of situations and perceptions of threat.

Power - How people define and use power is an important influence on the number and types of conflicts that occur. This also influences how conflict is managed. Conflicts can arise when people try to make others change their actions or to gain an unfair advantage.

Values - Values are beliefs or principles we consider to be very important. Serious conflicts arise when people hold incompatible values or when values are not clear. Conflicts also arise when one party refuses to accept the fact that the other party holds something as a value rather than a preference.

Feelings and emotions - Many people let their feelings and emotions become a major influence over how they deal with conflict. Conflicts can also occur because people ignore their own or others' feelings and emotions. Other conflicts occur when feelings and emotions differ over a particular issue.

Conflict is not always negative. In fact, it can be healthy when effectively managed. Healthy conflict can lead to...
Growth and innovation
New ways of thinking
Additional management options

If the conflict is understood, it can be effectively managed by reaching a consensus that meets both the individual's and society's needs. This results in mutual benefits and strengthens the relationship. The goal is for all to "win" by having at least some of their needs met.

The International Rescue Committee provides critical assistance to more than 700,000 people uprooted by the brutal ethnic and political violence in Darfur, Sudan.

 http://www.theirc.org/media/www/darfur_hope_amid_the_violence.html

With more than 2 million people driven from their homes, Darfur has been described as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.  Fighting is increasing across the region and the people of Darfur are suffering violence, atrocities and abduction. Amid desperate conditions, the International Rescue Committee delivers lifesaving aid, protects women and girls, and speaks out for global action on behalf of the Sudanese people.

Note

NGOs address a host of issues, Including, but not limited to, women's rights,  environmental protection, human rights, economic development, political rights, or health care. In numerous countries, NGOs have led the way in democratization, in battling diseases and illnesses, in promoting and enforcing human rights, and in increasing standards of living.

Some of these NGOs only impact a small region of the world, while others have spread across multiple continents. Amnesty International, for instance, has more than a million members and affiliates in over 90 countries and territories.

NGOs have few formal powers over international decision-making, they have many accomplishments to their credit. In recent years, they have successfully promoted new environmental agreements, greatly strengthened women's rights, and won important arms control and disarmament measures. NGOs have also improved the rights and well-being of children, the disabled, the poor and indigenous peoples.

 http://library.duke.edu/research/subject/guides/ngo_guide/

I interested in one of the NGO wich is called GCI(Green Cross Internetinal)

Our mission

The mission of Green Cross International is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity's relationship with nature.

Green Cross International:

  • * Promotes legal, ethical and behavioral norms that ensure basic changes in the values, actions and attitudes of government, the private sector and civil society, necessary to build a sustainable global community
  • * Prevents and resolves conflicts arising from environmental degradation.
  • * Provides assistance to people affected by the environmental consequences of wars and conflicts.

What do we do ?

Green Cross International provides unbiased environmental analysis and expertise,

In 2005, Green Cross launched a global campaign for the Right to Water in order to raise public awareness concerning the current water crisis and to urge national governments to negotiate and adopt an International Convention on the Right to Water.

The ongoing activities of Green Cross International are centered around three main axes:

History

In January 1989, when addressing the Global Forum for Survival of Humanity, President Mikhail Gorbachev mentioned an idea of an organization, which would apply the medical emergency response model of the Red Cross International to ecological issues and expedite solutions to environmental problems that transcend national boundaries.

Picking up on that idea, the delegates of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro (June 1992), approached Mikhail Gorbachev (former President of the USSR) mandating him to create and launch this organisation.
Green Cross International (GCI) was formally launched in Kyoto, on 18 April 1993, thanks to the generous support of Mr Shoo Iwasaki. Upon the invitation of Mikhail Gorbachev, many renowned personalities accepted to join its Board of Directors and the Honorary Board.

In order to gain credibility, it was important for Green Cross International to establish national affiliates, which would enjoy autonomy in conducting their own projects but would also participate in at least one international programme.

The first set of National Organizations (GCNOs) formally joined the GCI in The Hague, in spring of 1994. These included Japan (President Shoo Iwasaki), The Netherlands (President Awraham Soetendorp), Russian Federation (President Nikita Moiseev), Switzerland (President Donald Hess) and the United States (President Diane Meyer Simon).
To date Green Cross International is represented in 30 countries around the world: Argentina, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Côte d'Ivoire, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Republic of Korea, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Spain, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and United States.

Green Cross International has been granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and with UNESCO. It also cooperates directly with the UNEP/OCHA Environmental Emergencies Section, UN-HABITAT and other international organizations.
