Evaluation

This year in English class, I did well on reading books or watching movies silently and on writing.

However, I failed to express my ideas by speeches very well because I'm shy of speaking

in front of many people, so I want to do better on that especially.

Also, I didn't write many journal entries although I have read more to write.

I deserve 5 for my grade because I did try hard and succeeded on most of the parts I tried.

Next year, I deserve to be stay in B advanced because I have to try harder to move up.

My holiday

I spent a special holiday last week; I went to ‘Kosta' in Shanghai. That is kind of an assembly

of churches near Shanghai. It is the first time I participated there and as I'm introverted, I couldn't

participate in the activities aggressively. However, the people in the Kosta jumped and sang

passionately when we sing gospel songs. Since I saw them doing that, I could change myself a bit and

sang passionately, too.

Although I went there for church thing, my main purpose was to meet my friends. I met several people

from SSIS, and several people who left for Shanghai. I was so excited that I shouted when I met them.

We gathered at night after the worships and we talked all night until we fell asleep. Next morning,

we suddenly woke up and realized that it was almost time to assemble. Everyone was so surprised that we

went out without washing.

Although there were several accidents during the Kosta, it was real good experience meeting people

as long as we could take charge of the accidents. If an opportunity is given to me, I would like to participate again.

Acting for Hamlet

I'm acting Hamlet with HaLim as Gertude for scene 4, act3. In that part, Hamlet is really upset about his mother that she is in love with Claudius rather than be sad about the king's death. At first, I thought I only had to act toughly. However, after I watched the scene again, I realized that I have to control myself; sometimes smoothly but sometimes toughly. It will be difficult for me to act really like Hamlet as I'm not so good at shouting. Also, I have to shake HaLim and act more realistic and then HaLim cries. The most difficult part is that I have to memorize all of my lines for Hamlet; it's too long to memorize. I wanted to act Gertrude, but HaLim insisted to act her instead. I will practice and try to act like Hamlet.

International schools and Local schools

I'm going to compare International schools and Korean Local schools. For the first time I came to this school from Korea, I couldn't get used to everything in this school, the way they do was completely different from Korea. Personally, I like SSIS's way much better than Korean local schools'.

Firstly, International schools are usually free to do things. I know there are rules to be obeyed in this school, too, but in Korea, they are much stricter than here, we get to be beaten when we disobey the rules. Some strict teachers in this school might scold me angrily, but at least they don't beat, ever. It is important to make students follow the rule every time, but beating students doesn't always make things go right, it might even make things go worse. Students at my age might even disobey more as he or she would be in puberty so, it would rather be better to solve the problem by talking to them smoothly.

Secondly, education way in two schools is different. Again, education is also free in the international school. We can sometimes choose subjects or so according to your own favorite. In Korean local school, you don't really get much opportunity to choose something you want; you just do what is required.

As a result, as I like the way of international schools, I would like Korean local schools to receive more of the others' way, change and fix the way that was wrong.

Hamlet

In English class, we have watched two different kinds of Hamlet; one was a movie by famous actors and another was a play film which was filmed during the real play. The first one wasn't really long as some parts were omitted. However, the second one had almost all of the detail parts of the story and it was too long and I even felt boring sometime during the play. I could get better understandings from the movie as it showed the main points simply, but I think too detailed play doesn't give me strong impression about the main points. In addition, not only the actors had better appearance on the movie, but also I personally thought the actors on the movie acted better than the actors on the play. Lastly, backgrounds in the movie were like real but on the play, as they had limited stage, the backgrounds were not really vivid.

In conclusion, I personally prefer to watch the movie rather than the play if you like to enjoy Hamlet as they are really vivid, and you feel like you are in the movie.

Apples and Oranges HaeJin 9N

Apples and oranges are completely different kinds of fruit. However, I'm going to compare them with some of their factors. In fact, some similarities can be found between them. Through this comparison, I wish I compare them properly, and get more knowledge about these fruits.

First of all, apples are more nutritious than oranges. According to the charts that compares nutrients in apples and oranges, apples contain more amounts for most nutrients they have commonly and they contain more kinds of nutrients. Proximates, minerals, vitamins, lipids and amino acids are contained more in apples than in oranges. There is even a saying, ‘An apple a day will keep the doctor away.' Even though this is exaggerated, people day this because at least apples are healthy enough for people.

In addition, apples have more types than oranges. There are more than 7,000 different kinds of apples in the world. We can sort out apples by sizes, colors, tastes and shapes; some are round and some look like hearts, some are sweet and some are tart, they taste different because they have different amounts of sugar, the flesh can be hard or soft, and the skin can be thick or thin. Comparing with this, there are only about 600 different kinds of oranges in the world. There are fewer aspects to sort out oranges than apples; sizes, colors and tastes and also they don't have many types in their each aspect.

In the contrary, Oranges are more useful than apples. We can use both apples and oranges in our life. We can eat fresh apples for sure, we can make apple juice for dessert in the morning or we also can use small pieces of apple for cooking or salad. We can eat fresh oranges, make orange juice, or use oranges in salads, or to decorate cakes. These uses so far seem very similar to each other; however there are more uses of oranges. We not only use oranges for eating, we can use them as pocket heater, simple skin lotion, perfume and mosquito repellant. There might even be more uses of oranges in our life, while apples don't do as much functions as oranges do.

As a result, I assure that apples are better than oranges in the factors of nutrition and types, although oranges have more uses. I learned many new things about apples and oranges from comparing them and they are both very useful and healthy. In spite of which fruit is better, the important thing is that people need to have some knowledge about fruits, and use them effectively.

Princess Diaries 2 -HaeJin

Princess Diaries 2

By Meg Cabot

230 pages

Main character                                                                                                                                               The main character of this book is Mia, but because I have already explained about her for the Princess Diaries 1, I would like to introduce her best friend, Lily. Simply, Lily is a person who is completely opposite from Mia. She is good at almost all of subjects, just like a genius and she leads her life thoroughly. Although Mia and Lily are best friends, they often have disagreement with their own opinions.

Summary                                                                                                                                                     In the previous story of this book, Mia has already got used to the princess life. The second part of the Princess Diaries is mainly about Mia and Michael getting closer in their relationship. At first, Mia herself thought that she likes Josh Richter but later she realizes that she actually likes Michael, who is Lily's brother. Michael also likes Mia but he doesn't express his feelings at all, so Mia thinks only she likes him. However, Michael starts to express his feelings to her by writing an e-mail to her, using a nickname, Mia is so curious about who is the person keep sending her an e-mail. Finally, she finds out that the person must be Michael.

Personal Response                                                                                                                                               I was excited at that Mia realizes her actual feeling and started to have feelings about Michael more seriously. As I kept wanted Mia and Michael to know their feelings each other, Mia knows that Michael also likes her as she does finally and I'm satisfied about that. However, I'm still feeling lack of that Michael doesn't know that Mia likes him yet. I hope that in the next part of this book, they will express their feelings to each other.

Princess Diaries 1 -HaeJin

Princess Diaries 1

By Meg Cabot

230 pages

Main character                                                                                                                                               The main character of this book is Amelia, but she's just called by Mia. Mia is five foot nine real ordinary freshman in Albert Einstein high school, who is flunking in Algebra and often gets F for most subjects. Her mom is a painter and her dad is working in the government, they are divorced. Her mom is going out with her Algebra teacher and she really doesn't appreciate that. She likes Josh Richter, who is the most cute guy in her school, but she's introvert and thinks she has so many problems with her appearance, so she haven't even said a word to him.

Summary                                                                                                                                                     Mia is an ordinary freshman and she has a lot of complex with her appearance. One day, she finds out that she is not an ordinary girl anymore, but the princess of Genovia, her dad is a princess of Genovia and she is the next throne. Her life has totally changed in one minute. She can't believe it, but since that is true, she has to take princess lessons with her grandmother, the Queen of Genovia, a bodyguard is always with her and she has to act like a princess. She hasn't tell anyone yet and she's not gonna tell anyone untill she actually is a princess of Genovia. Because of that, she acts unusual, Lily is wondering about it and Mia is not gonna tell about it, so they are kind of in fight. However, one day, her picture is on the cover of the Post, so things are not going the way she wants, everyone knows she's the princess of Genovia and reporters are everywhere she goes. Now she has nothing to hide from everyone. At first, she didn't like to be the princess of Genovia but now, she is getting used to it.

Character I like to be friends with                                                                                                                         I like to be friends with Hakim Baba in this book. She is a quite, smart and rich girl who has the bodyguard for herself. Everyone in the Albert Einstein high school doesn't like her so much and doesn't notice about her so much, so she usually eats lunch alone. In the past, Mia used to do that too, but when she became alone because of that she and Lily was in a fight, she just sat by Hakim Baba although she didn't like her very much. However, as time went through, Mia started to get to know her better and she knew that Hakim Baba was a nice girl to be a friend. Actually, I also have some fixed ideas about some people just by their appearance, I want to improve my personality about that and be friends with people whom I thought that way and realize that my thoughts were wrong, that they also could be very good friends.

Personal Response                                                                                                                                           At the beginning since I started to read this book, I felt somewhat boring, but the more I read the book, the more I got interested in the book. I like this part of the book that she didn't tell anybody but everybody knows the truth accidentally. I saw the movie of this book, so I already know general content of this book, so apart from the content of the book, I could more concentrate on learning new words.
